The One Piece of Advice That Shifted My Creative Process

I used to believe in routines. Every day I would wake up early, make my bed, take a shower, pour myself a steaming cup of coffee, and get to work.

But that last part was always the hardest.

Being creative is not easy. Unfortunately, there is no magic button that you can press to summon the muse. Many times I would stare at a blank page for a while and end up writing about something I wasn’t passionate about, just to write about something.

This turned into a routine. I continued forcing myself to write for a couple of months but that has only led to burnout and a year-long writing hiatus.

I’ve decided to focus solely on my 9 to 5 for a year and didn’t even think about getting back to writing until one conversation completely changed the way I approach this craft or any other type of creative work.

I was talking to my illustrator friend whose productivity I always admired and she gave me a piece of advice that completely shifted my beliefs about being effective as a creative.

Like all good advice, it was extremely simple.

When you have an idea make use of that state of mind and get as close as you can to executing it immediately.
