Working a regular 9 to 5 office job, I’ve always wondered how it would be to work remotely. I’ve heard people say that it is either a mess and nearly impossible to get anything done and stay productive while working from home or that it is the best thing that ever happened to them and they wouldn’t do it any other way.
As an introvert, I’ve always enjoyed staying home. Being able to do my job from the comfort of my own home seemed like a dream. So when the lockdown happened, I was obviously scared because of all the terrible things that were happening in the world, but also pretty enthusiastic about trying out a new lifestyle.
At first, it just felt weird. I was at home in my pajamas, but I was supposed to sit down in one place for hours and do my job, which just did not make any sense. It also reinvoked some PTSD from those awful weekends when I had to work on my days off because of some crisis at work.
It took some will power and about a month for me to get used to the new environment and learn how to separate life from work. But after I did, I’m pretty sure that I’m not going back. Here are some reasons why:
Working from home, I’m saving about 40 minutes in the morning that I would spend getting ready and about 50 minutes to get to work and back. That is one and a half-hour every day that you could invest in yourself. Do you want to read more books this year? Learn a new skill? How about having an extra day in a week just to do that? Working from home helps me save about 7.5 hours each week, which is almost a full working day, and I would love to keep that time to myself.
It makes my introvert soul happy
If you’re like me, long days at the office can be draining. You might relate to those ‘coming home after a long day of talking to people’ images with the demon taking off woman suite and lighting a cigarette (Polly Nor’s drawings actually). Well, guess what? That is not a problem if you work from home!
I’m always more productive in the evening. When I work from home, I can schedule my day in a way that is best for my productivity and creativity instead of having to show up to the office in the morning, drinking three coffees in a row, and pretending to be a lark.
It is easier to create rituals for taking care of yourself and your mental health. Journaling, meditating, practicing mindfulness, or just enjoying a cup of tea while looking out the window. Whatever it is that keeps you sane, working from home makes it possible to do it regularly and without distractions.
Spending more time with family
If you live with your loved ones, you get to spend more time together. You can go to lunch together, go for a little walk or squeeze in an episode of Friends to distract yourselves. It can be challenging for some to find yourselves locked with your family or a loved one and might take some work and patience, but if you can get through those bumps together, you can get through anything!
Working remotely is not for everyone. Avoiding distractions, having to motivate yourself, feeling isolated, and risk of overworking are all pretty good reasons to not want to do it. You’ll have to learn how to separate your work from your personal life and how to not lose touch with the world while staying at home every day.
It requires some willpower and discipline, but if you are willing to put the effort, the results may surprise you!
